You Look Like the 4th of July!

In the spirit of the upcoming holiday, we asked some of our most unique and inspiring friends, What defines July 4th for you? (And they are a festive bunch!)  Below they share their patriotic plans, summer holiday traditions, and one delicious recipe!

    HONORWoman Asks:

Locale -  Are you to be found by a quiet lake upstate, sizzling on a rooftop in Miami?..
Food&Drink -  Do you have a go-to July 4th BBQ menu? Will you be mixing up a delicious cocktail? Going out?
Tunes - What song or album will be in heavy rotation for your festivities?
Tradition - Fireworks on the roof, s’mores on the beach? What defines July 4th for you?

Roanne Adams Creative Director & Owner of RoAndCo Studio

Locale -  I’ll be in Connecticut with my friends and family. We plan to spend the day boating and fishing on the Long Island Sound and then we’ll stop off on a small island for some beach time and a lobster bake.
Food&Drink -  Every year it’s either a lobster bake or BBQ’ed ribs. My husband is a master BBQ man! This year, I think the menu will consist of steamed lobster, potato salad, corn on the cob, a berry pie…very American fare!
Tunes - Probably a combo of classic rock and new stuff like Tom Petty, maybe some Twin Shadow and a bit of Chairlift.
Tradition - The best thing about being out on the island is that we get to see fireworks all along the coastline from Connecticut to Long Island. It’s a really beautiful, surreal sight.

Benjamin-Emile Le Hay Editor, NYObserver; Director, Le Hay Fashion Press

Locale -  Well, last year I spent the weekend in Cape Cod with a dear college friend and then jetted from Logan airport back to the city on July 4th to catch fireworks at a midtown penthouse soiree. This year I’m making my first trek to Fire Island with the one I love for some madness at a boutique beach hotel.
Food&Drink -  I’m vegan! Watermelon with berries and corn on the cob (hold the butter!) Back in the day my parents would have beautiful Maine-style spreads with lobster. Since I won’t be seeing my family on the 4th, I’ll fly to Maine the weekend after for some family sailing & fishing in the Atlantic.
Tunes - I jam out to jazz and classical music in the morning. Later it’s all about disco & 80’s!
Tradition - It’s all about enjoying the weather and being with family & friends. Since I was little, I’ve always hated fireworks.. too loud!

Locale -  For the last few years our kids have been at their Vermont summer camp during the holiday, so the 4th has taken on a different patina. I will be in the city this year so I will be watching the show on the Hudson (which I love to do), and then spending time with friends on a Tribeca rooftop.
Food&Drink -  Watermelon always kicks off the summer season for me. I like it with some fresh sage leaves.
Tunes - I’m going to be listening to the new Cat Power, and the old but never tiring music of Alex Chilton and Big Star.
Tradition - I am a bit of a pyrotechnic and so to me the 4th of July is all about the fireworks. I cried when Rudy Giuliani instituted the ban on fireworks in New York City during his mayoral term. I am not a roman candle kind of girl, but rather a spinning lantern, popping pagoda, psychedelic pinwheel one. I used to set up small tableaus of chickens laying fiery eggs and motorcycles propelled by the light of a fuse, all toylike and made of paper and gunpowder. My brother-in-law always gets some good finds in Connecticut, and on Long Island where they live, we put on a show in front of their home with family all around and a few local kids in the mix. When I am upstate I don’t miss Peter Schjeldahl’s party. He puts on a fantastic choreographed show that is really in your face and makes the Macy’s show seem like jello to his chocolate parfait.

Locale -  I am always relaxing at my country house on holidays with family and friends. It is my safe haven. Days are spent by the pool and evenings on the screen porch, mesmerized by the fireflies. I love fireflies!
Food&Drink -  Beer and wine to go with the menu: Slow cooked Southern style pulled pork sliders, crimson slaw, buttermilk and bacon cornbread, and potato salad with fresh herbs (see below for the recipe!)
Tunes - Well, I am still a little behind on the music front, so we tune into Pandora (maybe by next year I will be using Spotify)! We will start with jazz and then move into Motown.
Tradition - We invite the same group of close friends to join us poolside each year. Food, music, drinks and long dips in the pool.

Stacey’s Creamy Lemon Herb Potato Salad

3 lbs of baby red potatoes
    3T unseasoned rice vinegar
3/4C mayonnaise (I like to use light mayo)
3 medium green onions sliced thin (or my personal adaptation - a handful of chives from my garden)
    1 celery stalk, chopped
    1/4C fresh parsley, chopped
    1/4C fresh basil, chopped
    2T fresh dill, chopped
1 1/2tsp lemon peel, finely grated

Bring potatoes to boil in a large pot of water. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until potatoes are tender (about 17 minutes). Drain; let stand until cool enough to handle. Cut potatoes into small chunks. Place 1 layer of potatoes in a large bowl; sprinkle with some vinegar, salt & pepper. Continue layering potatoes with vinegar, salt & pepper. Add remaining ingredients; toss. Can be made ahead; cover and chill. I have served this slightly warm as well, and it’s delish too!

    The Locals: Val Bitici

We recently visited Macelleria, the charming Italian restaurant just East of our home on Gansevoort St., for the bridal shower of Val Bitici, editorial freelancer for Vanity Fair, writer for OliviaPalermo.com and author of her own fantastic blog Misc V.

HW: What about HONOR resonates with you and what made you choose the absent collar dress for your shower?

VB: My mom is the most elegantwoman I know and she introduced me to Honor. She took me to [the store] a few months ago in search of a dress for my bridal shower. As soon as I walked in, I was captured by the ultra-feminine silhouettes and beautifully crafted clothing.  Much like the first time I met my fiancé, I knew the absent collar dress was perfect for me the moment I sawit. The 1950s-inspired silhouette and delicate lace paneling on the back were perfect, and the dress fit as if it was tailored to me!! There’s no question thatGiovanna Randall has a clear vision and a knack for creating quintessential ladylike fashions

HW: Are there any special details about your wedding you can share?

VB: I’m marrying the man of my dreams and couldn’t be more excited! We’re getting married on the beach in Bridgehampton in August. Our ceremony will be followed by an indoor reception and a late-night bonfire on the beach where we’ll make s’mores and watch the Perseid meteor shower - a phenomenon that happens just once each year. The first time I ever sawa shooting star was with Alex (my fiancé), so it’s sure to be a magical evening!

[For our honeymoon] my fiancé and I will spend two weeks in Bali. Neither of us has ever been to Asia and we can’t wait to explore such a far-off place!

    HW: A wedding-night meteor shower!

Val, your blog is so lovely and I know you are a contributor for Vanity Fair as well as Olivia Palermo’s site. Is there anything else you’ve been working on recently that we should know about?

VB: Thank you! My blog,miscv.tumblr.com, is a perfect platform on which to showcase anything and everything that interests me.  I have a few projects on the horizon, but nothing is set in stone quite yet. In the meantime, I continue to learn each day from my peers and mentors at Vanity Fair, and also from Olivia Palermo and her dedicated staff of editors.
